The Future of Hydrogen Turbines

Blue Hydrogen

Blue hydrogen derives from natural gas through the process of steam methane reforming or pyrolysis (sometimes called turquoise hydrogen). Steam methanation mixes natural gas with hot steam to enact a chemical reaction to create hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Additional water is then added to the mixture to convert the monoxide into carbon dioxide and more hydrogen. The carbon is separated and used or sequestered – leaving behind blue hydrogen. Pyrolysis is a more recent adoption to separate hydrogen and carbon in natural gas. It has the added advantage of the resulting carbon created in a solid and inert form. 

Blue hydrogen is currently considered the most common and economical way to produce hydrogen while producing little to no emissions. 

Green Hydrogen derives from the production of hydrogen from renewable resources through water electrolysis. The process splits water into the basic elements, hydrogen and oxygen, using an electric current. 

Green hydrogen is very versatile and generates zero emissions. The electrolysis process can be powered by renewable energy such as wind, hydropower, and solar energy.
